A day at the (duck) races

Sometimes I really do love Sussex and I was reminded of this last weekend when the boyfriend and I visited Storrington’s annual duck race. Where, as the title suggests, you pick a duck and then watch it race! The cute rubber ducks are £1 each to sponsor and are simply released into the river and left to race. It’s not exactly nail biting action, as they float pretty slowly (!) but was certainly a fun way to spend a sunny afternoon.

It’s held one Saturday every May in the library car park and there are car boot stalls, stalls from local shops, cakes, a bbq and live music. It’s not a massive event but has a lovely village atmosphere. All the proceeds from the duck races go to the local school, although there was a cash prize for the person who picked the winning duck (there were five heats and a final race) but sadly we didn’t get anywhere near!

Are there any quirky village events near you?

  4. This looks amazing! We took part in one when we were on holiday in Norfolk last summer- but I'm definitely putting this in the calendar for next year (it's a lot closer!) xxx

  8. I love this! I think there is a village somewhere, possibly Gloucester, where they roll cheese down a hill and race after it haha! My village doesn't have anything like this sadly :( Xx

  9. This is pretty cute though, I don't remember if you have any quirky events in my hometown, I don't think so. We would normally have fates and things.
It's always nice to donate the money to a local cause too.

  10. Obviously I adore this! :-) We've got a river running through our high street and they used to have a duck race (almost wrote 'rave' there, now that would be interesting...) but they don't seem to run it any more.
Local quirky events - well there's the whole of the Somerset Carnival season, that's pretty unique and we also have a Daffodil Festival every Easter in a local village. Plenty of places nearby do wassailing as well in the spring! :-) xx
